Specially developed for quick projects, Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint makes up-cycling tired old IKEA furniture into a fun and enjoyable task. Here’s our tips on how you can create a brilliant piece of bespoke design.
1. Before you start:
As with any creative project, it’s good to make sure you have the right equipment, Annie Sloan’s range of paints, brushes and waxes have been specially developed over the last 24 years and are great investments. Annie has sourced the best ingredients and manufacturers to make sure you can achieve a quality finish and most importantly to make the project easy. Plus investing in the brush and wax will help you on your next Annie Sloan project and believe us there will be more – this stuff is incredibly addictive!
It’s important to make sure your surfaces are clean and oil free as this will effect your finished look. Some new IKEA pieces can have an oily film on them for packing and shipping purposes and this should be removed using a cloth moistened with low-odor white spirit.
3. Painting tips:
Start building up the layers of Annie Sloan paint for your desired look. Annie Sloan paint is naturally thick so try and paint thin layers. This also means that a little goes a long way so a single 1 litre pot will cover a large chest of drawers.
Be creative with your painting, Annie Sloan Chalk Paints are incredibly versatile so you can achieve all kinds of looks from Shabby Chic French Country by adding a dark wax over a light shade to Modern Retro with vibrant colours and an ultra smooth finish.
To really update your furniture add some new hardware like contemporary handles, use a stencil to add graphic shapes, or even completely transform the piece with a new set of vintage legs or add panelling to the drawer fronts.
4. The perfect finish:
Finishing with Annie Sloan Soft Wax, provides a durable finish that is easy to maintain. Apply at least two coats of Chalk Paint® and then two or three coats of Soft Wax for protection, allowing each wax coat to dry 24 hours before applying the next to get that extra durability you need. You can easily maintain your finish by simply wiping the surface with a soft cloth and mild soap and water to clean, and refresh every now and again with a light application of wax as needed.
